COVERAGE CHECK · EXACT WORDS MATTER
Coverage follows the use, product, and plan
Start with the exact active ingredient, product name, form, health use, and insurance plan.
As of September 2026, one medicine can be approved for more than one health problem, and a plan may cover it for one problem but not another. For example, a medicine prescribed for diabetes may be covered when the same medicine prescribed for weight loss is not.
Call with a precise question
Use the exact generic name, brand if one is being considered, form, and health use. Ask about the formulary, which is the plan’s covered-drug list, and prior authorization, which is the plan’s approval step before a fill.
As of September 2026, Medicare drug coverage generally excludes medicines when used for weight loss, while the same medicine can be coverable for another accepted use.
Medicare weight-loss drug pageAs of September 2026, Medicare had a short-term program, the GLP-1 Bridge, covering July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027: enrollees meeting its conditions paid $50 monthly for certain weight-loss medicines that mimic a natural appetite hormone. To find out whether you qualify, ask your Medicare drug plan.
Medicare weight-loss drug pageThat $50 was not credited to your Part D deductible (what you pay before the plan begins covering costs) or to your annual out-of-pocket cap, and you could not use a coupon to lower it further.

- Is this exact product on my plan’s list?
- Is this use covered?
- Is prior authorization required?
- Which pharmacy can fill it?
- What will I pay before and after the deductible?
Keep the answer, date of the call, and reference number from the plan. If the prescription changes, run the check again with the new details.
